  • Requirements to connect a LoRaWAN device to the Box
    This article lists the requirements to connect a LoRaWAN device to the Wattsense Box.

     

    List of LoRaWAN sensors compatible with the Wattsense Box

    In order to connect your LoRaWAN device to our Box you'll need to have in mind these informations :
     
    Wattsense works to provide you with the best database of decoded LoRaWAN equipment.
    Based on our expertise in this field, by consulting our compatibility checker, you can easily find out if Wattsense is directly compatible with your LoRaWAN sensor equipment.
     
    1. If your LoRaWAN device is not in our compatibility checker, it means we don't have the associated codec. You can still connect the sensor to our products but you won't have the decoded data.
    •   You will have access to the Raw payload of your device as well as the signal quality informations.
    •   Feel free to ask us to add the codec you need (the sooner the best) 
    2. In order to pair a LoRaWAN sensor with a wattsense Box you will need to make a JOIN.

    Join procedure

    A Join is a pairing process specific to the LoRaWAN network that requires the following steps.As with any pairing process you must fill in the required pairing information in both devices for the process to work.
     
    The first step is to configure the LoRaWAN equipment in the Wattsense user console.
    Here is the information you will need to set up your loRaWAN device in our Box :

    • DevEUI / AppEUI / Application Key are the parameters given by your supplier.
    • CodecID : It will be automatically filled by Wattsense according to the manufacturer/sensor reference. If the LoRaWAN equipment is not known in the Wattsense database, select None in the manufacturer and product reference field. 

    In the "Advanced tab" you will be able to configure the Class type of your device. Class A is set by default

    Information about Device activation

    Please note that there are two methods for device activation :

    • Over-The-Air-Activation (OTAA)
    • Activation By Personalization (ABP) - Not supported by Wattsense
    PointDexclamationSmall.png Wattsense supports only OTAA method. It is the most secure and recommended activation method for LoRaWAN sensors. Equipments perform a join procedure with the network, during which a dynamic device address is assigned and security keys are negotiated with the device.

  • LoRaWAN codec requirements
    This article lists the LoRaWAN codec requirements.
    Wattsense can add for free any LoRaWAN sensor provided that they meet the requirements below:
    1. The sensor sends the entire payload of data in one go. Wattsense does not handle fragmented packets sent in several transmissions.
    2. The sensor can be used by anyone. It is not tied to a specific environment.
    3. Wattsense does not require a complex user interface to configure or interpret the sensor's data
    4. The codec is not customized. Which it means it can be used for other users
    5. The manufacturer is capable to provide the following should you ask or when asked by Wattsense:
      • Exact reference of the sensor
      • Technical documentation describing the structure of the payload
      • (optional) Javascript library of the codec. This will reduce considerably the development time
      • (optional) A contact from a reseller

  • Checklist to debug your LoRaWAN Network
    Here is the important checklist to follow if you have trouble to connect LoRaWAN equipment :
     

    Verify AppEUI, DevEUI, and AppKey

    The same AppEUI, DevEUI and AppKey stored in the end device should be provisioned onto the console.
    If the values ​​are incorrect, the Join procedure will fail.

    • DevEUI: Globally unique device identifier
    • JoinEUI (AppEUI): Application identifier
    • NwkKey (Application Key): Root key for deriving session keys

    Repeat JOIN process

    The join procedure is the process by which a LoRaWAN end device establishes secure communication with the network. Join process is specific to each Lorawan end device supplier. This information is available in the manufacturer technical documentation.

    After adding the sensor in the console, its status is assigned to Waiting for pairing.

    If you still have this symbol after the Join procedure, please repeat the procedure until you see a Paired symbol :

    Appropriate Class Type

    All LoRaWAN end-devices support Class A, although Class C could be included on your device.
    If your device use a different class than Class A, you can specify it in the advanced section:

    Check Manufacturer and product reference used to communicate

    Be sure to specify the correct sensor manufacturer and model. This information is very important because each sensor has its own data encoding system (codec / uplink-downlink encoding messages). A sensor will not work if it is not binded with the correct model.

    Verify Frequency 

    LoRaWAN uses a proprietary spread spectrum modulation, so the frequency must match with your device. The correct frequency allows to transmit the data correctly in the network  :

    Sensor is paired but only SNR/RSSI/SF properties are available

    This probably means you will need to update your Box's firmware version (please contact Wattsense support). You can check your version in the console banner by clicking the information button.

    Sensor is paired but no data is available
